School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering was founded in 1956. The major responsibility of the School is fostering talents of high technology in the disciplines of Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Engineering for our Country, and also be engaged in the important tasks of high-tech research of the Country. Up to now, the School has 4 departments, Remote Sensing Department, Photogrammetry Department, Geographical Information Engineering Department, Geographical Condition Monitoring Department, and an Experimental Education Center. The School has 3 master’s programs in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System, Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems, 2 Ph.D. programs in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System, and Postdoctoral Research Workstation in Geodesy and Geomatics Science and Technology. Among these, the discipline of photogrammetry and remote sensing is the state key discipline evaluated by Ministry of Education (MOE), and has been supported by "211 project" and "985 project".
In connection with the major requirements of the remote sensor from the space flight, aerial, and ground, as well as its spatial information catching and analyzing, because of the national economic development, regional development, and emergency response, School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering has done a lot of research work, such as high resolution remote sensing spatial location and geometry processing, high resolution remote sensing image understanding, high function analyze and serve of the massive multi-source spatial information, etc. Resent research are focus on Fully Digital Photogrammetry, Information Fusion of Multiple Sources of Remotely Sensed Data and Extraction of Semantic Information, Positioning and Integration of RS/GPS/GIS Technologies, Close Range Photogrammetry and Virtual Reality Technology, Airborne LIDAR Data Processing, Processing of Low/Mid Resolution Remotely Sensed Data, Remote Sensing Technology for Natural Disaster Management, Remote Sensing in Inland Hydrology, Object Oriented Classification of Remotely Sensed Imagery, Ocean Parametric Inversion and Information Fusion Using Remote Sensing, InSAR simulation, Spatial Data Analysis and Data Mining, GIS Open Platform, and Geospatial Data Grid etc.
After decades of development, School has made a number of leading domestic research achievements, and also won a lot of high opinions from the international. In recent 5 years, the School has in charge of more than 400 research projects. Among those, 863 project 7 items, support science and technology project 4 items, the project of National Science Foundation of China 15 items, the National Defense project 5 items, International Cooperation project 2 items, Open fund and enterprise cooperated project more than 300 items, etc. Among those projects we have finished, there are 2 items have won the Second Prize of national level, 2 items has won the First Prize, 1 item with the Second Prize and 5 items with the Third Prize of provincial level. We have published 22 monographs. Established the aircraft-satellite-ground integrated earth observation facilities system, which can fulfill the requirement of high-level education and scientific research of modern remote sensing science and technology.
The school has a team with strong force and reasonable construction in the discipline knowledge and academic degree. The School now has about 70 faculty members, including 2 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 academicians of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, 2 members selected by the “Thousand Talents Program” of Organization Department of CCCPC, 2 special-hired professors of Wuhan University, 2 members selected by the “Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University” of MOE of China, 4 part-time professors, 23 professors and 21 associate professors , and 18 Ph.D. supervisors.
Facilities and Equipments
In recent years, because of the great support from "211 project" and "985 project", School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering has made great progress in Scientific Research Infrastructure, and has World-class laboratory equipment, we have MODIS Data Reception Station, LASER scanner, POS system, Remote Sensing Platform based on Unpiloted Aerial Vehicles, remote sensing FT-IR spectrometer, imaging spectrometer, microwave scatterometer, radiometer, Terrestrial Mobile Surveying System, graphic workstation (SGI, SUN, HP, ect.), and current popular software of remote sensing and GIS processor, such as ERDAS, PCI, ENVI, ArcGIS, three-dimensional Virtual Reality Skyline, SAR data processing software.
